    • Advise your marshal course Location,
    • Issue the volunteers shirts
    • Issue “hi vis” vest and
    • Provide snacks packs that volunteers (who have signed up) can collect.
    • There will also be morning tea food after the meeting.

A Detailed History of our Shed

One of our “originals”, Norm Thursby (IRP), has written an incredibly detailed historical piece on our Shed, spanning the events from its infancy (when it was just an idea) all the way through to what it was at the end of 2020. A huge “Thank You” to Norm for what is indeed a historical document which will be a valued reference and insight into the history of both the evolution of the Shed and how our founding fathers created the wonderful institution that our Shed is today. Present and Future Covid Requirements

On 29 August 2021, the Shed introduced a new safety protocol to ensure the best protection for members against Covid.  We will be requiring that new/renewing members show their Covid vaccination status. Following on from that, we are introducing a “no jab, no entry” restriction from 1 January 2022.  To be clear: from that date, you must be fully vaccinated against Covid to enter the Shed premises. This is a necessary step to ensure a safe environment and we are hoping that it will give you confidence to socialise and work with your fellow shedders.

A very generous member has donated a belated Christmas present to the Shed. Thank you to John Hobbs for the 50″ TV which will be used in the Gym for our group training sessions.

GOOD NEWS

As from Monday 6th July the Buderim Men’s Shed will be open for all activities with no limitation on numbers.
We are still required to observe the covid-safe plan that we developed for our initial limited reopening. A copy of the protocols that all members will have to observe is attached here: Full Reopening Protocols. Please read this document before coming back to the Shed.

Open Day 2019

Our open day was a huge success, being the first at our new premises. More than 60 prospective new members enquired about joining us and we raised much needed funds to service the debts incurred in building our new home. Many thanks to all those who put so much time and effort into this major event.

It’s Nice to be Appreciated.

Inspection – Late November

Ross and Norm gave a few of the troops a guided tour of our new digs. Wow! All were impressed (read “blown away”) by the scale of this build and what the boys have achieved in producing such an amazing BMS HQ. It will set a very high standard for future Men’s Sheds across our beautiful country! Congratulations to all those involved in this very complex and involved project.

Annual Open Day 2018

Well, our 6th Open Day last Saturday was a best ever by a considerable
margin with
*the records broken in the amount taken
*the record raffle funds raised (thanks to Richard Webb and
his untiring efforts) and
*the  record number of people attending,
*the full house of attending politicians from three levels of
government
*the magnificent team of helpers under Dick Winfield
*the massive organisation bringing it all together, creating a great
festival and putting it all away afterwards.

Thanks to all who helped and those who attended contributing to a true Open
Day showing the diversity of work being done in the Buderim Men’s Shed
through our activities and the great positive atmosphere and camaraderie.

A great success. Again thanks to all who helped

Further October Progress

Even with some weather setbacks, the progress is astonishing!

01 October 2018

Cladding and car park coming along nicely! Many thanks to William Baarslag for the excellent overhead drone photo.

Further Progress (17 Sep 2018)

Things are moving quickly now, with the first shed skeleton under way and the entrance road and car park taking shape.

Progress (20 August 2018)!

The dry weather has created some horror stories with drought and fires, but it has allowed our new shed to finally progress from a scar in the bush to an established worksite.

To all Shedders living alone

Hi guys. Just prior to Christmas I was made aware of the fact that according to a survey by the University Sunshine Coast, 20% of our shed memberships live alone. As one of this 20% I am aware of some of the difficulties this group experiences.

One such shedder said that Christmas was the loneliest day of the year.

We can get together at the shed during the day but sometimes it would be nice to be able to share a meal or a social event with someone in the evening.

So I have had what is at this stage just a thought bubble; what if the shedders without partners could form a group who could arrange activities outside shed hours?

If you are one of this 20% and you think this thought bubble has some merit, contact me at the coordinates below, preferably by email but phone contact is quite OK.

If there is enough interest we can get together and make some plans!

General Meeting next Tuesday 21 June 2016 starting 11.00am. As mentioned at last general meeting we have invited 6 Federal political candidates for Fairfax who will attend and give a brief insight of their policies and in particular in regard to Men’s Sheds.  We will have a short General Shed meeting 11.00am to 11.45 following which our own Craig Allingham will conduct the 45 minute session with the prospective politicians. If you have a question you would like to put to the group please type it out and hand to Craig prior to the meeting. See below

You may be one of the estimated 40% of the electors who choose to lodge a pre-poll vote for the Federal Election on July 2. If so, don’t vote yet.

At our general meeting on July 21 we will be hosting a forum with at least six of the candidates for the seat of Fairfax.

Come along and hear what they have to say about shed funding, community support and local issues. The party leaders will give you the big picture (macro economic) positions, but we actually will be voting for a local candidate, so it is important to impress them with our interest and attendance while they strive to impress us with …. well with something I hope.

The moderator for the session will be Craig Allingham who can’t wait to shut them down after their four minute speeches!  Come along and bring relevant questions to pose during the session or face to face at the sausage sizzle with those courageous enough to stay on.

Nutrition Survey

Judi from the USC sent this for forwarding to members

The survey will take about 10 minutes of your time and you have a chance of winning a $50 voucher.

Please help us to make this a successful survey

John Payne

Dear Shedders:

You have a chance to win one of ten $50 Coles/Myer vouchers by completing a quick 10 minute survey. They are found in the front reception area under the name badges or alternatively they can be completed online using this link: danacraven.com

If you would like to have a one hour consultation with Dana (Dietitian) you go in the draw to win a $100 Coles/Myer voucher.

Please complete the surveys as support of the USC by the end of June 2016.

Thank you in advance.

Live Well, Poo Well

Come along Tuesday 31st of May at 12.30pm (bring your lunch if you are game) to the main meeting room at the Shed where you can hear the latest information on foods and how they effect your bowel health from our nutrition students Lauren and Judi.

After which, Craig Allingham will give a fascinating demonstration of safe and effective toileting mechanics and how to reduce your chance of hemorrhoids, polyps and bowel cancer.

This whole session will take about 30-40 minutes of your time. Or on average, about two poos.

No need to let us know, just turn up on Tuesday next and prepare to be amazed and entertained.

Garage Sale

The Men’s Shed will be conducting a Garage Sale at the Shed on Saturday 21 May 2016. The previous Garage sale raised a considerably amount of money for the shed. We are asking for help from members with the accumulation of goods intended for sale. Items we can sell e.g. plants, books, furniture in good order, bric-a-brac etc.

Where possible the goods need to be stored at your home until Friday 20 May 2016.

If the woodworking, metal and leather groups can make items before the Sale, this would be appreciated, or any group that may be able to assist with any saleable goods.

In order to make my job easier it would be appreciated, if you can contact me by telephone, email or written note, advising of any items you will be donating. All items donated and available for sale will be recorded.

Yours sincerely

Dick Winfield

Shed Coordinator

 BUDERIM MEN’S SHED NUTRITION PROJECT

At the November 2015 General Meeting we were fortunate to have The University of Sunshine Coast nutrition students Emma Strutt and Rachel McMahon present us with an entertaining and informative session about nutrition and its impact upon our health.

What an appropriate title for their audio-visual presentation. “GRANDAD’S DIET DILEMMA”. Click on this link to see the visuals. You’ll be pleased you did.

The presentation was engaging because it was well researched, polished and professional and clearly explained in terms we can understand how to make better food choices to improve our health. It reminds us that many commercial packaged food products, especially breakfast foods, are high in salt and sugar, have minimal nutritional value and use food packaging that suggests non-existent health benefits. An example of a better breakfast option was minimally processed oats, fruits, fruits canned in its own juice and yoghurts. Sadly for the writer, bacon and eggs are not one of the recommendations.

Options for lunch and dinner are offered and focus upon a balanced diet. Examples are eating whole grain breads and limiting red meat to about three palm size serves per week. The visuals are interesting because they cover the WHY as well as the WHAT and are very easy to follow.

The advice that margarine is a better option than butter caused quite a stir with many of us having our long term preference for butter challenged and excited much comment. The spirited response proved that 80 older men were really listening; a sure indicator of a successful presentation. The section on interpreting food labels was excellent and the wallet sized memory jogger we each received will be of great help when we food shop.

Rachel and Emma’s sound advice is part of Craig Allingham’s ongoing project promoting and enabling men’s health and fitness within our shed. Integrated into this program are Cookery Classes for members who need to learn the basics and put the advice into practice. Following this presentation, a healthy cooking class was held at the shed, putting into practice the lessons learned and conducted by Rachel and Emma. The first group is now running as a follow on to the nutrition presentation.

We look forward hearing their next report on their research to inform improvement to our shed services.

“Who We Are” Video

IRT Foundation was established in 2014 by IRT Group to change perceptions of older people and of ageing. In October 2015, the foundation launched Australia’s first YouTube channel to provide relevant news and information to over 55s- The Good Life.

The show features stories relevant to older Australians and demonstrates that we all have the opportunity to age without barriers.

With men’s health in mind, The Good Life’s film crew visited Buderim Men’s Shed to talk to us about the benefits and importance of places for men to interact with other men as we get older. Watch the BMS presentation here.

Mens Shed ANZAC Horse Project

The Minister for Veteran affairs Stuart Robert MP unveiled a monument to the Australian Light Horse on Saturday 31 October 2015 at a park in Woombye, Queensland. This monument was designed, assembled and erected by members of the Buderim Men’s Shed.

The project began in January 2014 when Buderim Men’s Shed members discussed what lasting contribution the shed could make to the Centenary of ANZAC commemoration. It was agreed that the role of the Australian Light Horse deserved far greater recognition for its often overlooked pivotal contribution to eventual victory in World War 1 (WW1). The decision was made to seek financial assistance through the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary local grants program to construct a memorial.

The project was driven by Vice-President Barry Cheales and designed by shedder and resident artist Jeff Franklin. Jeff suggested a stylised ‘Waler’ horse because the breed is synonymous with the mounted regiments during this period of WW1. Following discussions with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council a suitably significant location at Woombye was confirmed. The site already has a Light Horse museum featuring memorabilia and acknowledges the presence of two troops of the Australian Light Horse based in this region; one in Woombye and the other in Maleny.

The design has five panels which focus on the five letters of the word ANZAC. Starting at either end the viewer can only see the panel edges. As one moves around the monument the ‘Waler” is revealed looking battle weary, tired and sad at never seeing Australia again. Reaching the far end and turning the ‘Waler’ again disappears before reappearing a second time. This represents respect for the passing of the ‘Waler’ to be replaced by mechanisation and the passing of the Light Horsemen who made the ultimate sacrifice. The lighted yellow glass insets depict the rising and setting sun as we remember the loss of the ‘Walers’ and their riders the now legendary Light Horsemen.

After almost two years of solid effort to organise, design, build and erect the monument was ready for unveiling. On the 31 October 2015, a large parade of veterans, led by a band, a group of WW1 re-enactment nurses and twenty one Light Horses marched down the main street of Woombye followed by two Australian Army light amphibious armoured vehicles to the Woombye Cenotaph. A military service then remembered and honoured those who fought in the decisive Battle of Beersheba exactly 98 years before and all others who have served Australia. The Battle of Beersheba in which the Australian Light Horse regiments played a pivotal role in achieving the final victory in the Third Battle of Gaza, was the last time mounted riflemen were used in battle.

After the service the large crowd moved on to watch the unveiling by The Minister for Veteran affairs Stuart Robert MP and attended by Federal, State and Local government politicians, RSL representatives and senior military personnel.

Since the memorial dedication ceremony and the parade there has been a noticeable ripple effect among all levels of government and the community we serve that recognises the positive contribution the Buderim Men’s Shed and its members are making to community building.

The Buderim Men’s Shed sincerely thanks artist Jeff Franklin for a fantastic public art piece of international standard, Barry Cheales who was the driving force behind the project keeping it on track and the other shedders who assisted on the day.
