Yakety-Yak

talktableBuderim Men’s Shed Yakety-Yak and Discussion Group meets on Tuesdays at 10:00 am.  The purpose of the Yakety Yak session is to encourage Shed members to contribute by comment or question in conversations and discussions and to develop greater confidence in having their say.

The first part of the Yakety Yak session is a Profile by a Shed member of the shed who speaks about himself so we all get to know one another better. The second part of the Yakety-Yak session is an informative short talk by an invited ‘guest’ or Shed member on a chosen topic which may include changes in lifestyle, recreation, technology and retirement pursuits, or others of general interest. We may hear a short poem or even a tall story, but the topic presented should stimulate questions and discussion from the group. There is general discussion after this talk. Sometimes group members are encouraged to do some research and one may volunteer to present a ‘for’ case and another member an ‘against’ case. Discussion on the topic is encouraged and open and managed by the Chairman of the session so that group members are able to be heard and given the opportunity to express their opinions without criticism or rebuke. Some recent topics for discussion have been:

  • Artificial rock and the pyramids
  • Elders in the community
  • How accidents happen
  • Euthanasia
  • Changes to the Australian Constitution to allow greater citizen participation
  • GFC and Inflation
  • Burmese refugees in northern Thailand
  • Political Correctness

The Yakety-Yak and Discussion group members are encouraged to attend when they can and to bring their lunch if they wish. Group members who have email addresses are sent reminders before each session. For further information and to volunteer to talk about yourself or a topic that interests you, email the Secretary or just come along to the next session. The topic for the day will be advertised in the foyer before the meeting.
